Species > Sasa & Sasaella

Sasa Invasive, low-growing bamboos, tolerant of heavy shade. Solitary branches.

- kurilensis (Dwarf Form) Culms very slender. Leaves large to very large, broad for their length and dark, glossy green. Seldom has marginal withering in winter, unless grown in very dry conditions. A most handsome bamboo.
- - ‘Shimofuri’ Culms slender, very light green. Leaves large, beautifully covered in numerous thin white stripes.
- nipponica Culms very slender, usually less than 40cm high. Leaves medium, dark green and rather narrow for a Sasa, having a thin withered margin in winter.
- - aureostriata Culms very slender. Leaves medium, often having broad but rather inconspicuous yellow stripes. Not consistent, with many reversions.
- palmata nebulosa Culms slender, often emerging in a long curve, and becoming blotched with brown after the first season. Leaves very large, broad for their length, rich glossy green. This bamboo imparts a tropical effect.
- - ‘Warley Place’ Culms slender. Leaves very large, often having rich yellow stripes of varying width, sometimes completely yellow. Reversions occur frequently and should be removed as completely as may be practical. This is a variegated form of S. p. nebulosa. Of interest to collectors only and not very garden-worthy.
- quelpartensis Culms very slender and seldom exceeding 40cm high. Leaves medium to large but broad for their length, developing withered margins in winter.
- tsuboiana Culms very slender and upright. Leaves large, developing a slight marginal withering during winter.
- veitchii Culms very slender, purple-green, often curved from the base. Leaves large, dark green and broad for their length, developing pronounced withered margins in late autumn, an effect resembling variegation, attractive in mass effect.

Sasaella invasive and low growing bamboos.

- bitchuensis Culms very slender, purple-green. Leaves large, broad for their length. Of no horticultural merit.
- masamuneana ‘Albostriata’ Culms very slender. Leaves medium to large, and strikingly white striped when young; the variegation becoming much less conspicuous by autumn and almost disappearing by winter. An attractive ground-cover bamboo.
- - ‘Aureostriata’ Culms very slender. Leaves large, sometimes developing broad yellow stripes. The variegation almost disappears by winter. Of little horticultural merit.
- ramosa (formerly Arundinaria vagans) Culms very slender. Leaves medium, having a narrow withered margin in winter. A fine ground-cover bamboo but absolutely rampant!
