China - discovery and
influence.
Whilst first working in China in 1987, the grace, size and beauty of
bamboo plants seen growing in parks and even hotels were a revelation and had a
truly lasting impact. Make no mistake, the work was challenging but rewarding.
The conditions were sometimes difficult for pampered Westerners. But due to the
genuine kindness and thoughtfulness of our Chinese hosts, all difficulties
including the language faded away to the point where China and its people have
continued to influence me.

Maureen - my inspiration
- my dedication.
My wife Maureen shared and quietly encouraged the growing bamboo
obsession.
Her tragic and untimely death in the Summer of 1999 left a huge void. This eventually
brought about the idea to develop this web site in her memory.

The graceful
evergreen.
Many people think of bamboo as a
graceful
evergreen plant that spreads rapidly to invade the
garden almost overnight! Some
of the so-called running root type bamboos just might, so the clumping root types are
often more suited to a small English
garden. However, with only a little more work, it is surprising how rewarding many
of the running root bamboos are -
some really are worth the effort! Many clumping and running varieties
can be pot grown and a full section is devoted to this excellent way of enabling the smallest of patio gardens to use these impressive plants.

The purpose of this site
is to provide a
source of information on the cultivation
of bamboo, but
from a personal
perspective.
This, it is hoped, will encourage others to
consider the merits of bamboo in the ordinary English
garden.
